The Home Depot offers credit cards to both individuals and businesses through its Credit Center. These credit cards make financing both small and large projects simple and affordable.

The Home Depot Consumer Credit Card

The Home Depot Consumer Credit Card can be used for in-store and online purchases. It does offer excellent incentives, such as no interest and no payments due for six months for any purchase over $299, although the interest will accrue if the balance is not paid in full by the end of the promotional period. Annual percentage rates range from 17.99 to 26.99%, depending on the credit credit worthiness of the applicant.

Benefits

Kimberly Rotter from the Credit Card Insider notes in a recent review that the introductory offer is attractive because it allows you to "spread the expense across six months' budget." Other perks include:

  • No annual fee
  • Online account management
  • Electronic bill payment
  • 25-day grace period

Drawbacks

Unfortunately, reviewers from Credit Card Chaser do not recommend obtaining this credit card because of the poor customer service that they received when account discrepancies arose.

Many cardholders were also dissatisfied with the consumer credit card because of the random manner in which their accounts were deactivated without any sort of warning, as noted in reviews from Credit Karma. Some consumers were even refused credit after their cards were canceled after being in a dormant state for an extended period of time, although their account had otherwise been in good standing.

Commercial Options

Commercial credit cards are intended for business use, and contractors often choose to open accounts with The Home Depot because they allow business owners to track charges by job. There are two types of commercial options available: (1) The Home Depot Revolving Charge Card and (2) The Home Depot Commercial Account. The sole difference between the two cards is the flexibility of payment options. The outstanding balance of the revolving charge card can be paid over a period of time or remitted in full each month. On the other hand, the commercial account requires the balance to be paid in full each month.

Benefits

Account activity can be managed online, and there is no annual fee. Other benefits include:

  • Free credit cards for all employees
  • Zero liability for fraudulent or unauthorized purchases
  • Simplified purchase tracking
  • Detailed monthly statements

Drawbacks

These accounts lack the flexibility of traditional business credit cards, as they can be used only to make purchases from The Home Depot.

Michael Pruser from Compare Wallet pointed out in a recent review that the APR on the revolving account is a bit excessive since "the small print states that the majority of people who apply get a rate of at least 25.99%" on all purchases, with the exception of those made during the introductory period that exceed $299.

Responsible Credit Management

As with any credit card, responsible credit management is the key to avoiding excessive finance charges and penalties. While a credit card from The Home Depot may offer great incentives for larger purchases, cardholders should be careful not to exceed their budget.

Late fees on each type of credit line vary by the overall card balance, and interest rates may be increased for consumers who fail to pay their balances on time.

Which Option Is Right for You?

Before choosing a credit line at this popular home improvement store, interested patrons should speak with a credit consultant and carefully review the terms and conditions of each offer to determine which account from The Home Depot best suits their needs without causing credit problems at a later date.
